Bam! Crack! Crash! With each swing of the sledgehammer, the Berlin Wall crumbles piece by piece. The crumbling is more than physical. Each part of the wall that shatters marks the beginning of a reunified Germany. East German soldiers and workers began the Wall’s construction in 1961. The Wall increased the East German government’s control over its people. However, it also became a symbol of East Germany’s tyranny.

“Tear down this wall!” American President Ronald Reagan ordered former Soviet Union’s leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Then in November of 1989, the East German government gave the green light for East Germans to enter West Berlin. The Berlin Cathedral was built near the turn of the 20th century, and was once the court cathedral of the Prussian royal family. The High Renaissance style of Italy inspired this fabulous domed structure.

The Hamburger Bahnhof is actually a contemporary art museum, so eat lunch before or after visiting it. Built in the 1840s, this is the last existing terminal station in Germany. The structure suffered major damage during World War II, and was reopened as a museum in the 1980s.

The S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations create the spine of Berlin’s transportation system. Created in 1924, the S-Bahn includes 15 lines and is mainly above the ground. On the other hand, the U-Bahn opened in 1902 and includes numerous stations on nine subway lines. Almost all of its track length is below the ground. During non-peak hours, the U-Bahn runs every 7 to 12 minutes, and 2-5 minutes during peak hours.

Leaps of Faith $12.78 Trumpeter Cuong Vu built a reputation out of his original compositions and their high levels of ambience and envelopment of the listener. With Leaps of Faith, he moves into the territory of jazz standards, applying sonic methods to constantly recognizable songs until they just break into unrecognizability. With a pair of electric basses, drums, and his own trumpet, Vu and his quartet start the album out by reworking songbook standards “Body and Soul,” “All the Things You Are,” and “My Funny Valentine” into experimental, looping soundscape versions of their former selves. A couple of originals provide slightly darker, more throbbing compositions and perhaps a nice look at Vu’s usual methods for a new listener. The album ends with one more Vu original sandwiched between interesting takes on George Harrison’s “Something” and Jackson Browne’s “My Opening Farewell” — slowed-down, almost entrancing versions of their original forms. Between stretched-out trumpet lines and the dual basses, Vu’s sound is enveloping, bathing the listener at all times. Lobster Leaps In $14.38 The Microscopic Septet had been disbanded for quite a few years by the time a pair of twin CD reissue compilations appeared on the Cuneiform label in 2006, prompting a brief reunion of the group to support sales. The musicians had so much fun that they decided to get together again to record a few of the many compositions that the band played during its existence, reuniting pianist Joel Forrester, soprano saxophonist Phillip Johnston, alto saxophonist Don Davis, baritone saxophonist Dave Sewelson, bassist David Hofstra, and drummer Richard Dworkin, with the one new addition being tenor saxophonist Mike Hashim. There were rehearsals and a few live engagements prior to the studio recording session, though Johnston warned that one can hardly expect the playing to be at the level of when the band was working regularly. As on their recordings of the 1980s, the originals by either Forrester or Johnston are often loopy and unpredictable, with lots of sudden twists and plenty of room for spirited improvisations. Wayne Horvitz’s “Night Train Express,” which was often used as an opening number when the band was in its heyday, is revived as a perfect way to reintroduce the Microscopic Septet, a fairly straight-ahead (by the band’s standards, anyway) number blending boogie, R&B, and bop. Johnston’s “Lobster Leaps In” has the flavor of Raymond Scott’s works of the 1930s and 1940s, though it quickly loosens up. Forrester’s “Money Money Money” is a wailing avant-garde masterpiece that sounds as if it could have been recorded during the 1960s.
